Totem: A Combinable Vertical Kitchen System

Flexibility, Modularity, and Minimalism

The Totem kitchen system, designed by Andrea Cingoli, is a unique and innovative solution that offers a combinable vertical kitchen system. With its modular design and sleek aesthetics, Totem allows users to create their own customized kitchen setup, regardless of space constraints.

The inspiration behind Totem comes from the concept of a totem pole, where objects are vertically stacked and interconnected. This design philosophy is translated into the Totem kitchen system, where modules can be combined to create a complete kitchen setup. The evolving lifestyle and the need for flexibility and adaptability have guided the design, making it suitable for various contexts, from offices to motorway restaurants.

What sets Totem apart is its versatility and modularity. The modules can serve as containers, ovens, extractor hoods, refrigerators, hobs, countertops, sinks, coffee machines, dishwashers, and more. The system allows for the use of these devices on one, two, three, or even four fronts, providing maximum functionality in a compact footprint. Whether it's furnishing an office, canteen room, existing kitchen, or solving space problems in small flats, Totem can be assembled and customized as needed.

The Totem kitchen system is realized through electrified container modules that can house various domestic appliances. Each module consists of a metal structure and a chosen coating, tailored to the specific context and functions it will house. The production process involves assembling simple and modular extruded, pre-folded, or calendered elements that are screwed together.

Technical specifications for each container element include a width of 650mm, depth of 650mm, and a variable height ranging from 150mm to 900mm, depending on the function it will accommodate.

With Totem, users have the freedom to compose their own kitchen setup according to their preferences. The system can be placed anywhere and integrated into any kind of space. Additionally, the inclusion of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) ensures operation even during blackouts, maintaining the cold chain of food and providing uninterrupted functionality.

The Totem kitchen system was developed over a three-year period, starting in February 2019 and concluding in February 2022, in Teramo, Italy. The design process involved extensive research into the minimum space requirements of various components and the needs of users in different environments, such as homes, offices, shops, motorway restaurants, campers, and yachts. Overcoming the creative and technical challenges of creating a system that is adaptable, efficient, and functional in a small footprint was a key focus of the design.

Andrea Cingoli, the creative director of the project, led the design team, which included Luigi Carbone for engineering and Umbertino La Sorda for modeling and rendering. The Totem kitchen system has received recognition for its excellence and innovation, winning the Iron A' Design Award in the Kitchen Furniture, Equipment, and Fixtures Design category in 2022. This award acknowledges the well-designed, practical, and innovative nature of the Totem kitchen system, which meets professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.
